It took a play off to decide the inaugural winner of the Elstow CC Golf Day. Level with the youngest member of the Thiarra dynasty after 18 holes on the Stableford rules, in lengthening shadows in front of a full gallery (sort of) the pair played the par 3 18th hole twice before Patrick King, Elstow fan and erstwhile second teamer, emerged victorious.
A sun dappled Beadlow Manor provided the setting for a successful day as fourteen took to the fairways to bring the curtain down on the summer’s ECC activities. Beforehand, the smart money was on Tony Harper being among the front runners for the title and he didn’t disappoint putting in typically a nuggety display. However, he finished a close third behind Patrick and Tas, as Rex Hedges and Rani Thiarra also carded decent rounds. Jimmy Tanswell won the the Nearest The Pin contest, his short game proving as solid and effective as his forward defensive.
It was left to Patrick to keep his nerve to hold off the challenge of Tas, who with his brother and cousin looks every bit as useful a golfer as he is a cricketer. Hani Thiarra presented Patrick with his green jacket as both enjoyed the applause of their peers, Patrick for his victory and Hani for his hard work in putting together and brilliantly organising a very enjoyable day’s golf.
(The field for the club’s annual Rodney Trotter Lookalike Contest was particularly strong this year….)
